Under Display Camera Technology
Some weeks ago, Redmi came up with an idea that every smartphone manufacturer has been wanting for a long time- achieve a true fullscreen bezel-less display. No, It is not about any weird motorised camera solution. This time, it is something even more interesting, the camera is truly under the display just like any other mobile sensors and the phone achieves an uninterrupted display without a motorised camera.
The officials told that they are currently testing on an under screen secondary camera that will remove the need of a notch, a hole-punch, or even a pop-up slider. The camera is hidden below a special low-reflective glass which doubles up as a camera lens on top as well. While it is still under works, and Xiaomi Senior VP has now spoken up on how this technology will work. While adding some more lines, he told that ‘Xiaomi's Under-Display Camera Technology can be a brilliant solution for a Full Screen Display coexisting with a front camera'.
How does under display camera work?
We can still see a ghostly outline of the camera under the display, but it doesn't require a permanent notch or hole to function and therefore doesn't block image.
Wang Xiang, Xiaomi's senior vice president tweeted some images followed by the description of how its under-screen camera technology will work. The reason Mobiles do need a notch-display is because the camera needs any materials above it to be transparent for allowing the light to enter. This is not the case in a normal phone display as the cathode and anode layers aren't transparent.
Oppo's Algorithm:
Oppo has also introduced camera module and customized display to make the technology work. The upper part of screen which is above the lens is formed of a unique highly-transparent material with redesigned pixel structure to ensure optimal transmittance of light. The camera too is special as it provides features like a large aperture, a big sensor, and greater pixel size to combat any light refraction.
A camera generally captures pictures when light collides the sensor through the optics, but having a solid material on top might make the picture quite blurry.
The officials at Oppo said there are 3 algorithms to increase the performance of camera without jeopardizing the display performance.
- The First algorithm is the White Balance one, Oppo made targeted changes and calibrated the color in front of any light sources that might obstruct the image.
- After that, there is the HDR algorithm which decreases overexposed highlights and enhances brightness in shadows.
- The third algorithm is Haze Removal algorithm, which is battling the issue of having a solid material on top of the lens; it works to increase the sharpness of the image.
Display in-a-display:
Xiaomi has solved the clarity problem by creating a display-in-a-display. It merges a small rectangular area with the phone's display that uses a "special low-reflective glass with high transmittance." The secondary camera is at its underneath. It permits the screen to show imagery unhindered, but at the same time doesn't block light reaching the camera when in use.
Screen lens Integration:
As of the official images show, the camera is still visible under the display, only thing is it looks more like a ghostly outline and will surely be much preferable to the existing alternatives. Also, Redmi has managed to get the transparent display doubling as the camera lens, allowing for very clear and crisp selfies using the embedded 20MP camera.
Though both Xiaomi and Oppo have not officially revealed which phone will have this under display camera but the number of people waiting for this technology is increasing day by day and smartphone lovers are keeping a track of every news that arrives regarding this under display technology.
